Serving Yourself, Serving the World
"I have so much to do, I can't possibly take time out to _____ (fill
in the blank - relax, spend time with a friend, read a book, get a
massage)". Does this sound like you? Many successful people believe
that they must fill every minute, and many of them fill it with
service to others - family, friends, volunteer work. While this may
seem laudable, forgetting to give to yourself will sabotage your
efforts to make a difference in the world. Sometimes this lack of
attention on oneself comes from a subtle, unconscious belief that
we're not good enough, that we don't deserve the goodness that we
lavish on others. If we just fill our time with attention to others,
we think, we'll justify our place in this world.
Every single human being in this world has a reason for being here.
That includes you! And the gifts that you bring to the world are
unique, and only exist in you. Whether your circle of influence is
your family, your work environment, your spiritual community, or the
entire world, YOU MATTER. Just breathe that in - say to yourself 'I
matter - I make a difference in this world'. As you say this
(several times!) you'll begin to see more and more ways in which you
do make a difference in the world. Many of them will be large, and
easy to see. Some may seem smaller, but are no less important.
Perhaps there are ways in which you make a difference that you'll
never know about - perhaps the person that you smiled at this morning
at the gas station needed that smile, or perhaps the car that you let
into traffic arrived safely, and on time. So take a moment, and
imagine all the ways, large and small, that you make a difference in
the world.
When we have something special and important to us, we take care of
it. YOU are special, and important. What kind of care are you
taking of yourself? Does taking time for yourself seem selfish, even
irresponsible? Actually, it's irresponsible to not take care of
something so important. So take a deep breathe, and say the
following: 'I am important, and always take care of myself'. How
does that feel? Are you comfortable saying that? If not, why not?
If this statement troubles you, take a little time to look for the
reason. Here's another great thing to say: 'I care for myself, so I
can better care for others'.
In what ways do you take care of yourself? Are there new ways that
you would like to explore? Most people who become coaching clients
are successful, relatively happy people. Coaching is not something
to 'fix' them, it is a gift they give themselves. Receiving the
support of a coach is a great way to move forward with your life,
live your dreams, and accomplish your goals, while celebrating all
that you are and all that you do right now.
So create a saying, or affirmation, that expresses how important you
are in the world, and the care and love with which you treat
yourself. Say it every day. Write it down and put it where you'll
see it - your computer, your bathroom mirror, etc. Take time for
yourself - for your rest, your renewal, your own delight. And go get
that massage!
Recommendation for the month:
Movie - 'Awakenings', starring Robin Williams and Robert de Niro. In
this movie based on a true story, Robin Williams plays a doctor,
caring for catatonic patients. His efforts result in miraculous
awakenings. If you love stories about triumphs of the human spirit,
don't miss this movie!
